How to Know If You’re Franchise-Ready in 2026

There’s a moment I see at least once a month.

A founder gets on a call with me.
They’ve built something good. Not just an idea… a real business.

It’s profitable.
It’s working.
It’s even growing.

And then they say something like:

“I think I might want to franchise.”

So we start talking.

The Story That Happens More Than You Think

Recently, I was on a call with a founder who had built a beautiful business.

She had done about $150K in revenue.
Strong margins.
A model that worked.

But there was a catch…

She was the business.

There were only so many days in a year she could physically do the work.
She had maxed out her calendar.

Then something happened that shifted her thinking.

Someone she trusted said,
“I’d love to do what you do where I live.”

And just like that… the idea of scaling showed up.

Maybe franchising.
Maybe hiring.
Maybe something bigger.

But as we kept talking, she said something that made me pause:

“I’m comfortable… I’m not sure I want to scale.”

That right there is the moment most people miss.

The Question No One Asks (But Everyone Should)

Not:

👉 “Can this business be franchised?”

But:

👉 “Do I actually want to build a franchise company?”

Because those are two completely different questions.

The Hard Truth About Franchising

Let me say this as clearly as I can:

Franchising is not for everyone.

And I don’t say that to discourage you.
I say it to protect you.

Because what most founders think franchising will give them…
is not what it actually requires.

What Founders Think Franchising Is:

  • A faster path to scale

  • A way to step out of day-to-day operations

  • A path to an eventual exit (maybe even private equity)

  • “Other people running the business”

What Franchising Actually Is:

  • Years of support before meaningful financial return

  • Constant communication, coaching, and problem-solving

  • Managing expectations, emotions, and opinions… daily

  • Being a cheerleader for other people’s success (often before your own)

  • Innovating… even when your franchisees resist change

And one of the biggest mindset shifts:

👉 You are no longer in your original business.

You are now in the business of
helping other people succeed in your business.

The Reality No One Talks About

There are thousands of franchise brands in the U.S.

Every year, hundreds more enter the market.

And yet… the total number stays relatively the same.

Why?

Because while new brands are entering…
others are quietly exiting.

Some stall.
Some never scale.
Some simply don’t make it.

Even more telling:

👉 The majority of franchise brands never grow beyond a small number of locations.

As one industry analysis put it:

“The vast majority of franchise brands never scale beyond a small number of units, with many struggling to surpass even ten locations.”

Which means:

Franchising is not just about having a good concept.
It’s about having the capacity to build and sustain a system.

Why So Many Founders Jump Too Soon

Back to that conversation…

As we talked, it became clear:

  • She didn’t have systems built out

  • She didn’t have a training model

  • She didn’t have clarity on structure (employee vs. contractor vs. franchise)

  • She deeply valued control and excellence

  • She wasn’t sure she even wanted the next level

And none of that is wrong.

But it does mean one thing:

👉 She’s not ready to franchise.

And that’s okay.

The Real Indicator of Readiness

If you take nothing else from this, take this:

Franchising requires you to be ALL IN.

Not curious.
Not “maybe someday.”
Not “let’s try this and see what happens.”

ALL IN.

Because it will test:

  • Your leadership

  • Your patience

  • Your emotional resilience

  • Your ability to let go of control

  • Your commitment to others

You will get feedback.
You will get pushback.
You will get opinions… lots of them.

And you still have to lead.

So… How Do You Know If You’re Ready?

Before you even think about franchising, you need clarity in two areas:

1. Your Concept

  • Is it truly repeatable?

  • Does it produce consistent results?

  • Can someone else (not you) do it successfully?

2. Your Mindset

  • Are you willing to support others for years before seeing your return?

  • Can you lead through conflict and resistance?

  • Are you okay stepping out of the day-to-day work you love?

  • Are you ready to build a company, not just run a business?

Because if either of those is off…

Franchising will expose it.

What I Want For You

If you read this and thought:

“I’m not ready yet…”

Good.

That’s not failure.
That’s awareness.

And awareness is what keeps you from making a very expensive mistake.

What I want for you is this:

👉 Get your concept right.
👉 Get your mindset right.
👉 Then enter the market with clarity and confidence.

Not pressure.
Not hype.
Not because it feels like the “next step.”

Your Next Step

If you’re even thinking about scaling your business, I created something for you.

It’s a simple way to assess where you actually are…
before you make a move you can’t easily undo.

It will help you see:

  • Where you’re ready

  • Where you’re not

  • And what needs to happen next

Shine Lesson Learned ✨

Franchising isn’t a growth strategy you try… it’s a commitment you make.
If your concept and your mindset aren’t aligned, scaling will only magnify the gaps.
Get clear first, then grow on purpose.
